Overview : Markandeshwar Temple is a lord Shiva temple located in Puri. Here sage Markandeya did meditation devoted to lord Shiva. He started wondering about a child floating on the sea in a banyan leaf. Finally lord Vishnu cleared his doubt.This ancient Temple is set up in the Markandeswar street next to the Markandeswar tank, on the north side of the Jagannath temple. The temple can be reached on the right hand side of Markandeswar road from Markandeswar chowk till Puri-Brahmagiri road. An open structure ,Markandeya tank is bounded inside a stone wall made of garbed laterite blocks. There are bathing ghats available for the tourists on the southern side of the tank. It is used for normal bathing as well as rituals like Mundan Kriya ,Pinda Dana, etc. which are executed on the tank steps. Markandeswar temple besides Markandeswar tank are of the 12th century AD. The history shows that Sri Ramanuja toured Puri throughout 1107 and 1117.
