The presiding deity Nadi Narasimhaswamy is so called because Narasimhaswamy temple is situated on the bank of a Nadi (meaning river in Kannada) called Kanva, where the sage Kanva is said to have engaged in penance eons ago. According to a legend, Lord Narasimha appeared in a dream of sage Kanva and advised him to set up a shrine here dedicated to Him. Recent history records that the ruler of Mysore Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar (1881 - 1940) had patronised this temple by donating 12 acres of land for the temple maintenance. The temple is said to be about 1, 200 years old and has gained prominence in view of its antiquity and divine prowess.
