Overview
The Nalppathenneeswaram Kirathamoorthy Temple, also called as the Nalppathenneeswaram Sree Mahadeva Temple is situated at the village of Panavally, in the Cherthala taluk of Alappuzha District, in Kerala, India. This temple is primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The place was initially called the Pandavar Veli but later got colloquially changed to Panavally. Four big stones are seen placed at a distance of about 1km apart on the eastern side of this temple. These stones are believed to be used by the Pandavas for boiling mill, during their exile.
About the Temple
Nalpathaneeswaram Sree Mahadeva Temple is one of the oldest temples of Kerala which is still under the administration of Raja Sassana Chepped. Presently, the temple is managed by three ancient Kaimal families namely Kozhisseril, Payippattu, Mullakkeril. The temple stands as the finest example of Indian architectural brilliance. The chief deity of this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva gracing here as Lord Kiratha Bhava. It is the 48th foundling of Saint Khara. The temple is situated amidst calm and peaceful environment which adds to the divinity of this place.
The deity here is offered kathakali. One another temple called the Oorali Parambathu Sastha Temple is situated on the north-western side of the temple. A recently performed devaprasana led by the team of Sri Chorodu Narayanappanicker discovered that the temple is more than 1000 years old.
About The Deity
The chief deity of this temple is Lord 'Nalppathenneswarathappan. The Lord here is in the form of Kiratamurthy. The temple also houses several other deities such as Lord Ganesha, Goddess Durga, Varahamoorthy, Rakshassu, Nagayakshi, Chovva bhagavathi, Ayyappa and Nagaraja.
Festivals
The annual temple festival is celebrated here in the malayalam month of Kumbham (February-March) for almost 7 days. Several traditional rituals are observed as part of this festival such as Utsavabali, Koodi ezhunnallathu, Bharani, Karthika and Araattu.
