Parippu Mahadeva Temple

Overview

Parippu Mahadeva Temple is located at the village of Parippu, under the Aymanam panchayath, in the Kottayam district of Kerala, India. The temple is referred to as “Nalparappil” in the renowned Shivalaya stotra and is associated with Thekkumkur raja. Presently the temple is managed by the Travancore Devaswom Board while the Bhadrakali Mattappally Nambudiri holds the tantric rights of the temple.

About The Deity

The presiding deity of this ancient shrine is Lord Shiva who graces facing the east. The temple is one among the 108 'Shivalayas' consecrated by Lord Parashurama. The Upadevas (Sub deities) include Lord Krishna, Sastha, Ganapathy and Bhagavathy. The main offerings to the deity are Dhara, Pinvilakku, Pushpanjali, Payasam and Koovalamala.

Legend and Stories

The temple is believed to have been built by the 'Madathil Raja' (Edappally raja) around 825 AD who resided at the Madathil palace, near Parippu. However, the local chieftain named Idathil Raja was not on good terms with Madathil Raja. While both the local chieftains were staunch devotees of Lord Shiva at the Mahadeva temple, they didn’t want to face each other at the temple. As a solution, two 'Balikkalpuras' (traditional frontage) were constructed in the temple, unlike the other temples in Kerala has only a single Balikkalpura.

It is estimated that almost 141 Nair families settled at the village of Parippu during the olden days. Traditional art forms like 'Ezhamathukali' and 'Kavanayeru’ flourished at this village. Paripu also had the geographical advantage of lying close to the water bodies which helped the village to attain political prominence. The village in fact housed the raja's military unit and trade relations, thereby proving to be an important center in that region.

Festivals

The annual temple fest (Thiruvutsavam) is celebrated in the Malayalam month of 'Meenam' (March/April). Maha Shivaratri and Thiruvathira are other prominent festivals of this temple.
