Overview
Thonnallur Pattupurakavu Bagavathi temple is located at Pandalam in Pathanamthita District of Kerala. It is dedicated to Bhadrakaali. Thonnallur Pattupurakavu Bagavathi Temple is part of the famous Hindu temples at Pandalam that also include Valiyakoikal temple, Mahadev temple and Kaipuzha Sree Krishna Swami temple. This temple hosted the first ever Devi Bagavatha Sathram in Kerala in 2010.
About the temple
Its main deity is Bhadrakaali. However there are shrines of other deities that include shrines of Lord Ganesha, Lord Siva, Udayan, Brahmaraksha, Yaakshi and Anamarudha. Other deities also include snake gods and goddesses. The temple also houses a Navagriha shrine that is built on the north-east side of the temple.
The temple complex also includes a platform for elephants, a holy pond, an office room, and a few banyan trees. The temple has arrangement for Hindu wedding, including feast hall and changing rooms. It also has a dais to conduct cultural events. The temple has a Navraatri mandapam situated near Pandalam central junction. The deity in the annexe temple is Saraswathi, the goddess of learning, music and the arts.
Festivals
The annual temple festival is conducted on the Aswathi day in the Malayalam month of Meenam. Special pujas are performed on that day. Cultural programmes are also conducted in addition to Devi Bagavath Sathrams, Sapthahams, and Navahams frequently. It includes renditions and lectures based on Hindu epics. The idol erection day is celebrated in June every year.
Navraatri is also of great significance to this temple. Special pujas, Carnatic music concerts and cultural programmes are performed at the Navraatri Mandapam annexe. Apart from Hindus, the organising committee for the Navraatri festival includes people from other religions also, including Muslims and Christians. The Navraatri Mandapam has facility to initiate Vidyarambham (starting of education) at the completion of Navraatri celebrations.
