About The Temple


Poddareswar Ram Temple

Poddareswar Ram Temple is situated on the Central Avenue Road, just a few minutes’ walk from Nagpur railway station. It is dedicated to Lord Ram and Lord Shiva. Ram Temple houses the images of Ram, Sita and Laxman - three major characters of the Indian epic Ramyan. This temple has fascinating exterior and interior look, which are made up of sandstone and marble. This well-acclaimed temple exhibits marvellous designs carved out of these two basic materials.


History of the Temple


The temple was constructed in the year 1923 by Sri Jamnadhar Poddar. The sudden demise of his only son, Mohanlal, in his youth, shocked Jamnadhar very much. This was the turning point of his life. After that, he started devoting more time to religious activities. He decided to construct a very big and beautiful temple and hence the temple came into existence.


Festivals


The main attraction of the temple is the Shobh Yatra (a grand parade) held every year on the occasion of Ramnavmi. The Shobh Yatra is marked by a procession of a decorated chariot adorned with flowers and garlands with the idols of Ram, Sita and Laxman. It is accompanied with the tableaus, depicting scenes from Ramyan and other Hindu epics. Other added attractions of the procession are the women in colourful attire carrying mangal-kalash (holy pot) in the heads and the firework display. Large number of pilgrims gathered here to celebrate the Ramnavmi festival with great delight.
