On the third day, the celebration covers the event of Sekkizhar assuming charge as the Minister of King Anabaya Chola and comes in procession in his ministerial attire. On the fourth day, the divine poet visits the Tirunageswaram Shiva temple built by him and performs Shiva Puja. The sixth day covers his authoring the Peria Puranam. He comes in procession with Lord Nataraja. The eighth day is the staging of Periapuranam (Arangettram) and the darshan granted to him by Lord Muruga followed by a procession with the Lord. The 10th day covers his attaining the Lotus Feet of Lord Shiva which is very devotionally celebrated.
Legend and Stories
The region was under the rule of King Anabaya Chola then. A noted Shiva devotee was his minister. His son Arulmozhi Rama Dhevar showed signs of high poetic abilities even while he was too young. He was known by the community title as Sekkizhar. The king made him his minister and honoured him with the title “Uthama Chola Pallavar”. Sekkizhar was a staunch devotee of the Lord of Tirunageswaram and built a temple following that design.
Though a Lord Shiva devotee, the king showed some lenience towards Jainism. To correct the king, Sekkizhar advised the king to study the history speaking the stories of great Shiva saints. With due regard to the advice of the minister, the king requested him to tell him their tales. Pleased with his Minister-Guru, Anabaya gave sufficient funds to the Minister-Poet, sent him to Chidamabaram to write the epic Periapuranam. Sekkizhar worshipped Lord Natraja to help him in the project. Lord gave the first word to the epic “Ulahelam”- the whole world. The epic was completed in a poetic style. Anabaya arranged the Arangettram.
