About the Temple
This is one rare temple where Vishnu appears on top of Garuda in the sanctum santorum. Legend states that once Sage Brigu performed a penance in the place where the temple stands. It is believed that Sage Mrigandu is still worshipping in this temple in an invisible state. It is also believed that Lord would appear on Garuda, if people born in Mrigasheersha Nakshatra (star) worship here often or on the day of the star. Sri Aadhinarayana Perumal, the procession deity, graces with His discus and conch along with consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi. People seeking a job equivalent to their qualification and a job with a decent salary are advised to perform abishek to Perumal on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Usually, the god appears on Garuda only during festivals. But, this is a temple where Garuda Seva is available to the devotee every day. People of Mrigasheersha star worship here for quick solutions to problems.
About the Deity
The main deity is Vishnu and called Aadhinarayanaperumal and his consorts are known as Sridevi and Bhoodevi. This is a Vaishnava temple where Perumal appears on Garuda unlike in other temples where he is seen in sitting, standing or reclining form only.
Legend and Stories
Sage Bruhu was performing penance here surrounded by Vanni trees but was interrupted by a chola king who raised high sounds to hunt a lion. Enraged, he cursed the king that he would have a lion’s face. The king begged for a remedy. The sage suggested that he bathe in Vettraru River known as Vruddha Cauvery and worship Perumal and get back his human face. Thus, the place assumed importance for Mrigasheersha star as the king was relieved from the animal (Mriga) face.
Festivals
Vaikunda Ekadasi in December-January months, Garuda Panchami, Gokulaashtami in August-September months and Sri Rama Navami in March-April months are the festivals celebrated in the temple.
