The Sri Adhimooleswarar temple is located in Thirupattrurai and is dedicated to Sri Adhimooleswarar. It is said that a Chola king once passed this region during a hunt and stopped to take rest. He spotted a white bird and shot an arrow at it. The bird escaped. On visiting the place again, the king saw the bird and waited near its nest in some bushes. He felt as if he could smell milk in that spot. When the king moved the bushes, he saw an anthill and continued to dig further. Milk began to sprout from the anthill. The king left the spot in fear. That night God Shiva appeared in his dream and told him that there was a Shiva Lingam there and asked him to build a temple in that spot. The region was therefore named Pattrurai (Paal and Thurai Paal in Tamil means milk and thurai means place). The God is known as Pattrurainathar. The God is also called Adhimooleshwarar. A grand Court Hall exists in the Arthamandapa Hall of the temple.
