Overview
The Boodhanarayan Perumal Temple is located in North Mada Street. It is dedicated to Boodhanarayana Perumal. It is an old temple and has one corridor with Sri Garuda, Thumbikkai Azhwar and Sri Anjaneya in front of the God's shrine
About the Temple
Lord Vishnu is found here in the form of Boodhanarayana, in two places at Surulimalai in Theni and in this temple. The Lord is a child but looks gigantic. He is seen taking the life of a demon woman, Bhoodana, who came to breastfeed the Lord with the intention of killing Him. She failed. The Lord is seated, holding His conch in the right hand and showing his left as an abhayahastha. A tirumanjanam is performed each morning. People pray to the Lord with sugar candy and sweet pudding seeking child with wisdom. The temple is on the Girivalam route in Tiruvannamalai. Devotees begin their walk in the Girivalam around the mountain and end the worship there. They get the theertha from the shrine. It is also poured at the entrance, offering the benefit of the worship to the Lord Himself. The Lord offers darshan sitting on Sri Garuda. On the last Saturday of Purattasi (English months of September and October, a bag of rice is cooked and spread before the shrine. This is offered as Prasad to devotees. As the Lord is too big, the quantity of rice is also large. On Krishna Jayanthi day, a special Tirumanjanam is performed and also on Ekadasi, Tiruvonam, and on full moon days. Devotees offer Tulsi garlands to Chakkarathalwar on Wednesdays with Sweet Pudding Nivedhana.
Legend and Stories
Legend says that Kamsa, the uncle of Lord Krishna, tried to kill Lord Krishna, because he was destined to be killed by the Lord. However, Kamsa failed and could not go even near the child. He deputed Boodhana to do this. She went to Lord Krishna in the guise of a woman and played with the child and breastfed Him. Knowing her mission, the Lord pretended to accept the milk, but instead, squeezed her life while feeding. Boodha is another name for demons. This is why he is called Boodhanarayana. A devotee built a temple for Lord Krishna in this design. Sadly, the temple disappeared in the days that followed. After many years, the Lord appeared in the dream of a devotee and told him that he was under the sand. The devotee recovered the idol and raised this temple.
