Overview
Ubayakathirgaamam is a temple dedicated to the Hindu god Murugan, who is worshipped as presiding god of Kali Yuga. The prefix Ubaya- means "second" or "sub" in Tamil. Hence the temple got its name, as it is considered to be a second Kathirgaamam (Kataragama) of the country. This temple is in Puloli in the Jaffna Peninsula of Sri Lanka. A Vinayaka temple named Periyadevanatthay Alayam is also situated beside Ubayakathirgaamam.
History of the Temple
This temple was discovered and named Ubayakathirgaamam by Lady T.S.Logaambal devotee of Murugan, who hails from Thirunelveli, a city in Tamil Nadu. The Lady Logaambal publication mentions that in the year 1909, God Murugan appeared in a dream to Lady Logaambal and informed the existence of the Chakra Yanthra (drawing) on the surface of a rock by the side of a wood apple tree at Pachchima Pulavar Kana Nagaram. He told her to draw a picture of the Yanthra and keep it with her for her daily prayers.
In year 1911, Murugan informed her in her dream that the place is in the Jaffna Peninsula of Ceylon. The scholars in Jaffna informed her that Puloli is the Tamil equivalent of the above mentioned Nagaram, which was named in Sanskrit. After reaching Jaffna, she succeeded in discovering the holy site, on the birth day of God Murugan.
In 1924, God Murugan instructed in her dream, that the Yanthra of the temple has the strong powers than the other temples and will do divine favours to the devotees. So it again became a duty of Lady Logaambal to spread the message to the devotees in Ceylon.
In a leaflet published on 25/07/1924, Lady Logaambal clearly instructed the people of the village South Puloli the power of the temple.
About The Deity
Ubayakathirgaamam Moolavar is a Chakra Yanthra, which appeared on a white rock itself. As unlike in other temples of Murugan, the Moola Lingam is in the form of a Chakra Yanthra, hence the temple got its name "Ubayakathirgaamam Sri Chakra Shanmugar Alayam". The noticeable feature of this Chakra Yanthra is it was not made by hand of man. It is a Suyambu Lingam, the Holy One revealing Himself on the white rock. There are a few projections and letters representing God Vinayaka and the powers of Shiva, to the right of the Yanthra.
Festivals
Camphor Festival - Krithika Star on the month of Karthigai
Theertham festival - Thiruvona Star, close upon to the Theertham festival of Kathirgaamam.
Rare Facts
Since the appearance of Ubayakathirgaamam to the villagers, with the guidance of Lady Logaambal, the temple was a miracle for the villagers. It is so common to hear from the villagers, mentioning the wishes fulfilled by worshiping the temple and Chakra Yanthra.
It is also mentioned that once when the people were not aware of the Yanthra, the white rock where the Suyambu Lingam appeared, was tried to be removed. In spite of seven explosions, the rock was safe without any damage. The rock was assumed to be having super natural powers, by the villagers.
