Overview
The deity of God Vishnu is worshipped at the beautiful Kalyana Varadaraja Perumal Temple which is located at Padmanabhan Nagar in Kaladipettai, Chennai. The deity of God Vishnu is called Kalyana Varadaraja Perumal and Goddess Shakti is known as Perundevi Thayar.
About the Temple
The deity depicts God Pavalavanna Perumal standing with a staff in his left hand and celebrations are conducted on the Panguni Uthiram day as it is known to be the Gods wedding day. The deity of God Vishnu is brought to the mandap along with the deities of Goddess Sridevi and Goddess Bhoodevi. All the deities are kept together after the celebrations. The devotees seeking for blessings to solve their problems regarding wedding, offer unstrapped coconut to the God as Nivedhana and later take it home for positive effects.
The festival of Sri Rama Navami is also celebrated in the temple for nine days. The day of Janana Utsav, God Rama’s birthday is celebrated. Garba Utsav is also celebrated as it signifies God Rama when he was in his mother’s womb.
Legends and Stories
As per a legend, God Vishnu’s devotee named Vijayaraghavachariar, worshipped him daily in Kancheepuram before leaving for work. Officer Colat Durai constructed this temple for Vijayaraghavachariar as he had to travel to Kancheepuram daily. But even after this, Vijayaraghavachariar still visited the same temple in Kancheepuram. He told Officer Colat that the deity in this temple draws him and then Officer Colat brought that deity to the present temple. The deity is worshipped since that day.
Festivals
The festivals of Acharya Sri Ramanuja Vizha is celebrated in the Chithirai month, Vaikasi Brahmmotsava is celebrated during the month of May or June and Krishna Jayanthi during August or September. Other than this, Panguni Uthiram is also celebrated in the temple with great joy.
