Overview
The Sri Kokileswarar Temple is located at Tiru Kozhambiam and is dedicated to God Shiva.
About the Temple
Renowned saints Tirunavukkarasar and Tirugnana Sambandar had revered this temple in their Thevaram hymns. According to the hymns, it is the 35th God Shiva temple that is located on the southern bank of the holy river Cauvery. God Shiva is in the form of swayambumurthy in this temple. The linga is pretty big in size especially its Bana part. Also, the foot prints of a cow are visible on the Aayudayar of the Linga.
About the Deity
The chief deity of this temple is God Shiva and he is known as Kokileswarar. He can be seen with his consort Soundara Nayaki.
Legend and Stories
God Shiva and God Vishnu once were playing chess and Goddess Parvathi was the referee for that match. While the match was going on, God Shiva asked Goddess Parvathi’s opinion about rolling the play stick. Whatever opinion she gave was in the favor of God Vishnu. This act made God Shiva very angry and he cursed Goddess Parvathi to be born as a cow on the planet earth. Goddess Parvathi accepted it and came to this place as a penance.
One another story that is related to this temple is that once there was a vidyadhara named Chandan. He was born as a nightingale as he was cursed by God Indra. He came to this place and did his penance and regained his original form. Because of that God here is known as Kokileswarar where Kokil means nightingale.

The main festivals that are celebrated in this temple include Karthikai Mondays and Panguni Uthiram.

Devotees come here and perform abhishekam to God and Goddess. They also offer clothing and contribute to the renovation of the temple.
