Overview
This ancient temple was believed to be built 2000 years ago. The main deity here is Lord Mangalyeswarar. He is a swayambumoorthy.
About the Temple
The mithi thiruvizha happens in Panguni – Uthiram. A woman who seeks to get married soon should light ghee lamps for Maangalya maharishi and once marriage is fixed, the first marriage invitation is kept towards him. Other than Emperumaan and Ambal, Sannadhis for Vinayakar, Dhakshina moorthy, Bikshandar, Arthanareeswarar, Valli - Deivanai sametha Murugar, Chandikeswarar, Durgai , Nandi and Navagraham are also found. This is the choice temple for the Uthiram starrers. They must take all opportunities to visit and pray in the temple at least on their annual star day. Those having problems in feet, the aged longing to join their sons again in life that once drove them away and women seeking longevity of their husbands choose this temple to realize their wishes.
About The Deity
Perumaan Tirunaamam is Arulmighu Maangaleeswarar, who is found to give his seva towards east direction. Ambal tirunaamam is Arulmighu Mangalambigai, found in a separate Sannadhi facing towards south direction.
Legend and Stories
Maharshi Mangalya, born in Uthiram star, was the Acharya in the marriage of Sage Agasthya and Sage Vsishta and Bhairava. The whole power of his penance was in his fore palms. He is the authority for all Akshada (rice coated with turmeric being sprayed on couples and while blessing others) angels flying in the air with garlands. The custom of printing wedding invitation now a days with the pictures of these deities came into practice based on this story. During the marriage events, it is believed that the Rishi prays for the parties in this temple invisibly. Also, the choice of Panguni Uthiram day for marriages is backed by this story.
Festivals
Panguni Uthiram in March-April is grandly celebrated in the temple. Vinayak Chaturthi in August-September, Margazhi Tiruvadhirai in December-January, Tirukarthikai in October-November and Navarthri in September-October are other festivals of the temple.
Thanks Giving
Soon after a wedding alliance is settled, the parties, after praying in their own family deity temples, come here to pray to Mangalya Marshi, place the invitation in his shrine and pray for his blessing for smooth procedure of the function till the end. After marriage, the couples come and pray to Lord gratefully. Any obstacle in the wedding proposals vanishes if the blessing of Lord is sought, according to faith.
Significance
Besides Uthiram starrers worshipping for relief from adversities they face due to planetary movements, others mainly are seeking wedding boons and family unity. Devotees pray for relief from leg pains. Women of Uthiram star pray for the longevity of their husbands. The aged, driven out by sons pray for safe return to homes.
