Sri Shivakozhundhu Easwarar temple

The Sri Shivakozhundhu Easwarar Temple is located in Theerthanagiri and is dedicated to God Shivakozhundhu. In the days of yore, a farming couple lived in this region. They had the habit of taking their food only after feeding a Shiva devotee. To test their faith, God Shiva did not send them any devotee one day. The couple went to their field with the intention of feeding their workers. They were also missing. Yet they waited. Finally, an old man came to the place. The couple requested the old man to accept their hospitality. The man replied that he would not accept the food free but would have it as a wage for a work he can do for them. The farmer asked him to plough his land. Meantime, the couple went home and returned with the food. They were surprised that the crop had grown and was ready for harvest. The farmer served the food to old man near the Kondrai tree and asked him how the crop grew so fast. The old man disappeared. The God appeared before the farmer and said that it was Him in disguise. The farmer begged the God to stay there. God granted his wish, stayed here as a swayambulinga. The presiding deity of this temple is known as Shivakozhuntheesar or Shivalingeswarar while the Goddess is known as Neelathakshi, Oppila Nayagi or Karuthadanayagi. God Vishnu and God Brahma are depicted as worshipping God Shiva behind the Lingodhbava in the goshta wall. Niruddha Vinayaka is represented as a sculpture on the pillar. Four Bhoodha Ganas appear to be worshipping God Vinayaka. The Kondrai tree where God Shiva consumed his food is in the prakara. The form of Vinayaka in this temple is known as Valampuri Vinayaka. The 3 - tier Rajagopuram of the temple faces east. God Vishnu and God Brahmma appear worshipping God Shiva behind the Lingodhbava in the goshta wall.
