Overview
The Deivanathan Vanamamalai Temple is located at Nanguneri which comes under the Tirunelveli district and is dedicated to God Shiva. This temple is also known as Thothatrinatha Perumal Temple and it is one of the 108 Divya Desam temples located in India.
About The Temple
This temple has been praised in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham and mangallasan which were sang long time back by the twelve azhwar saints. This temple is located just on the banks of the Thamiraparani River. This place is known as Nanguneri because of having four lakes on its surrounding. This temple boasts of a 5 floored Rajagopuram. This temple has been made in the style of Dravidian architecture. Also, one can see two prakarams that constitute this temple. This temple is also one of the eight Swayam Vyaktha kshetras of God Vishnu.
About The Deity
The chief deity of this temple is God Thothadrinathan and his consort is Varamangai Thayaar. This temple has 11 swayambhu idols. Sub deities in this temple include Chakratalwar, Lakshmi Varahar, Vishwaksenar, Lakshmi Narayanan, Tirukacchi Nambi, Kannan, Srinivisan, Alwars and Acharyas, Ramanujar, Kooratalwar, Andal, Rama, Pillai Lokacharyar, Venugopal and Manavala Mamunigal.
Legend and Stories
According to legend, when God Vishnu finished the demons Madhu and Kaidaba, the bad smell from their body spread across the earth and polluted it very badly. Goddess Earth lost Her natural purity. It is known that Mother Earth came at this very place for getting cleansed.
