The Sri Vekkali Amman Temple is located in Worayur and is dedicated to Vekkali Amman. Legend goes that once Paranthaka Chola was ruling this region. His guru was Sarama Munivar who was known to be a staunch devotee of God Shiva. He created a garden for God Thayumana in Trichy to grow flowers and offer them as part of pooja for him. However, the king took the flowers from the garden for his wife. Sarama Munivar advised the king against the wrong doing but the king humiliated him and said that the Acharya could use the flowers that were remaining in the garden. The Acharya prayed to God Shiva and the God turned west, opening his third eye in fury. Worayur was destroyed including the king's fort. The only place unaffected from the God's fury was the ground where Vekkali Amman was residing. People surrendered to the Mother for safety. Mother Vekkali appeared before the God in the form of a full moon to calm his anger and succeeded. Queen Bhuvanamadevi who was pregnant was also caught in the rain of flames from the God's eye. She had jumped into the Cauvery river unable to bear the fury. The current drew her away and a Brahmin at Utamacherry saved her and looked after her. Soon she gave birth to Karikal Peruvalathan. She was a staunch devotee of Vekkali Amman and believed that it was the Mother who had protected her and saved the Chola dynasty. The locals of Worayur still worship the Mother as their protector.
