Sri Venkatachalapathy Temple

The Sri Venkatachalapathy Temple is located in Karungulam in Tirunelveli and is dedicated to Venkatachlapathy. The temple is a few meters off the Tiruchendur main road, and is also called as Vagulagiri Kshetra. When king Subakandan was praying to God Venkateswara in Tirupathi to relieve him of an unbearable pain in the neck, the God is believed to have appeared in his dream and advised him to build a sandalwood chariot. This site has been dedicated to God Venkatachalapthy who dwells in this wonderful abode ‘Karungulam’. Karungulam is also known as ‘Vagulagiri Kshetram’. Vagulagiri is a small hill situated on the southern bank of river Thamparapani. Vagulagiri is situated on the way from Tirunelveli to Tiruchendur by the banks of the river Tamirabharani. There are two temples with gopuram, one on the foot of the hill and the other upon the hill. Vagulagiri hill is situated at the northeastern side of the Karungulam village. The people of this village are staunch devotees of God Venkatachalapathy, the main deity of this temple. The enshrined god in this temple is in the form of two sticks (Tharkals) which are used to drive the car in the temple car festival. These sticks are made up of Sandal Wood and placed close to each other and consecrated in the Sanctum Sanctorium. Many devotees come to Karungulam for the Chithira Pournami festival of this temple and offer their prayers to God Venkatachalapathy and take part in the activities of the 10 days Chithirai festival. Apart from the chithirai festival ‘Garuda Sevai’ is celebrated in all the Saturdays of the ‘Purattasi’ Month. Vishnu Sahasranama Laksharchanai is celebrated every year and concludes with a grand Pushpanjali on the day of ‘Masi Magam’.
