Legend and Stories
Legend goes that King Nanda Chola was ruling Uraiyur at that time. He was so worried that he had no children and he worshipped Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu was pleased by the Worship made by Nanda Chola and asked Goddess Lakshmi, His consort, to born as a daughter for the childless King Nanda Chola. Goddess Lakshmi, as a child, was found by the king Nanda Chola on a lotus tank while he went for hunting. And as the child was found on a lotus, the child was named Kamalavalli. Years passed, and Kamalavalli, a beautiful young girl, fell in love with Lord Ranganathar (the presiding deity of Srirangam Ranganatha Swami temple). The king Nanda Chola instantly made arrangements and got her married to Lord Ranganathar, who blessed the king Nanda Chola with child. As a celebration, the king Nanda Chola built a temple at Uraiyur. Since Lord Vishnu was in the form of a beautiful groom, he named the temple as Azhagiya Manavalan Temple.
