Overview
Surya Kalady Mana is located at Nattassery, near Kottayam. This ancient Brahmin Mana is famous for tantric and mantric rituals and is situated on the bank of Meenachil River. Hundreds of years ago, a member of Kalady family had got a mantric book from Surya Deva. Thereafter the Kalady Mana became famous as Surya Kalady Mana and the male members of this family got the name 'Surya Kalady Suryan Bhattathiri'. Surya Deva is considered as the Guru of Surya Kalady Bhattathiries and Maha Ganapathy is their Upasana moorthy or Thevara moorthy. Lord Ganesh had helped the family members on different occasions.
About the Deity
The Maha Ganapathy idol is placed inside of the Nalukettu. Here Ganapathy is worshipped in the form of Beeja Ganapathy (Ganapathy having ten hands and accompanied by wife). The Ganapathy homam in Surya Kalady Mana is entirely different from other temples. Surya is considered as the lamp or Vilakku for the five hour long Ganapathy Homam. Ganapathy homam and Palppayasa homam are done every morning. Mukkooti Homam and Nalikera Ganapathy Homam are the special offerings.
Festivals
Vinayaka Chaturthi – ‘Shukla Paksha Chaturthi’ day of month ‘Chingam’ is very important for Surya Kalady Maha Ganapathy. Festival ceremonies starts days before and on the same day all who come to this temple are treated as ‘Ganapathy’; ladies as ‘Vynayaki’ and children as ‘Bala Ganapathy’. After ‘Kalasabhishekam’ of noon pooja there will be ‘Maha Prasadamoottu’ which is known as ‘Ganapathy Prathal’ (Oottu, Prathal- feeding). On this day we can enter and pray in the temple all time.
Pooja
Special days – Maha Ganapathy homam, Poojas, Pushpanjalies and Nivedyam (libation) are done in this temple. On behalf of disciples Udayasthamana pooja, Kalasabhisheka and 18 Poojas are also conducted as offering. Single Appam and Ganapathy homam are the main offering. On attaining the rare wishes of the person offering like Karuka garland, Mukutti garland and Homam with Karuka, Mukkutti, and ‘Palpayasa Homam’ etc. are done daily. ‘Kunkuma Kalasabhishekam, Pushpabhishekam etc. are also offered by the disciples. It is believed that marriage happens if a person plucks Mukkutti and offers it on the door of Ganapathy after bathing in river Meenachil which flows side to this mana (Illam).

Meaning -Oh elephant-faced Lord, who is served by all the Ganas, who consumes the essence of Kapitta and Jamboophala, His favourite fruits, who is Uma's son, who destroys the gloom of His devotees, who handles hurdles, we worship your lotus feet.

Meaning -We meditate on the great power, we call upon the single tusked Ganesh, who grants wishes.
