The Theerthapureeswarar Temple is located in Tiruvattathurai and is dedicated to God Theerthapureeswarar. Seven temples on the banks Thurai of Vellaru are called Thurai temples. These are Adhi thurai (Karianur), Tiru Aaduthurai, Tiruvalandurai, Tirukarandurai, Tirunelvayil Arathurai and Tiruvattathurai (Thittakudi). To help devotees cleanse themselves from their sins, the God appeared in this sthala. He called these Thurais for the Seven sages (Saptha Rishis) addressing "Nee Vaa" meaning you come here. This came as River Vellaru, according to a story. The river is in the south of the temple. To avoid ravages during flooding, Nandhi the bull vehicle of God turned its head towards the river. The floods receded. Hence, the head of Nandhi is seen turning to side.
