The Thillai Kali Temple is located in Chidambaram and is dedicated to Thillai Kali. Once there was a heated argument between God Shiva and Mother Shakti over their supremacy. Both claimed supremacy over the other. Shakti argued her side with the use of force. Furious, Shiva cursed her to turn into Ugra Kali. When Parvathi requested for a solution, God Shiva said that she would be required to destroy the demons who were harassing the Devas. God Shiva also asked her to come to Chidambaram where he would be performing his dance for Sages Vyakrapada and Patanjali. She was supposed to reach him in the name of Mother Sivakami. Mother followed the instructions of the God stringently. She is known as Thillai Kali as well as Ellai Kali (deity of the border). Thillai Amman is seen facing west as a Shanta Swarupini. A furious form of Thillai Kali faces east in a seated form. Special poojas are performed at Rahu Kalam time on Sundays (4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.), new moon and full moon days.
