The Thirukalleeswarar Temple is located in Thirukallil and is dedicated to God Shiva. When God Shiva and Goddess Parvathi were getting married, Sage Agasthya was asked to remain in the southern part by God Shiva. This was because the northern part was likely to be lowered under the combined weight of the devas and sages who had gathered to witness the wedding. So God Shiva wanted to maintain the balance. On God Shiva's order, Sage Agasthya started towards the south, performing five yagas in Pancheshti, near Thirukallil. This was when God Shiva appeared in front of him in the form of God Somaskandar and guided him to go to Thirukallil. Agasthya went further ahead to build a temple for the God in Thirukallil installing a statue of Somaskanda. Agasthya performed sacrament, praying to God Shiva, for one mandalam. At the end of the prayer, God Shiva appeared before him along with Ambal. Thus, the God is named as Shivananda Eswara and the Goddess as Anandavalli.
