Overview
Thirunettoor Mahadeva Temple is situated at Nettoor, in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, India. This temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva lies about 10kms south of Ernakulam and 4kms from Vytilla.
About the Temple
Thirunettoor Mahadeva Temple is also popularly called the Nettoor temple or the Vyttila Mahadeva temple. The chief deity of this temple, Lord Shiva is believed to have been consecrated by the great sage Parashurama himself. Another belief is that this temple had the distinction of being a common temple for all the major Namboothiri families residing in the 32 Namboothiri villages of Kerala.
About the Deity
The temple is dedicated to both Lord Siva as well as Lord Vishnu. The temple also houses other deities like Lord Yogeeswara, Lord Sreekrishna, Ganapathi, Subrahmanya, goddess Saraswathy, Gulikan and the Nagas.
Festivals
The annual temple festival is celebrated on the Uthrattathi and Aswathy day of the Malayalam month of Dhanu.
Poojas
The right to offer poojas in the temple called “Thanthram” is held by members of Puliyannor Illam, an eminent brahmin family of that place. Temple poojas are conducted thrice a day daily. This temple is well known for the 'balitharpan', a ritual offered for the dead ancestors on the 'amavasya' day in the malayalam month of Karkkidakam (July- August). The Amavasya day of Kumbham is also considered special. Large number of devotees visit this temple on the above days for paying respect to their dead ancestors. Vadapooja is the most important offering on such days.
