Trikkannad Tryambakeshwara Temple

Overview

Thrikkannad Shiva Temple, Popularly known as the Dakshina Kashi the Thrikkanad sanctuary is situated on the shores of Arabian ocean, around 1km from Bekal.

Rituals

The sanctuary is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is known for its different traditions and customs performed for the well - being of the souls of the dead. On the new moon days, a large number of devotees flock to this sanctuary for pithrutharppanam (praise to the ancestors with symbols made of gold and silver). They play out the ceremonies and take a heavenly plunge in the ocean. It is trusted that the icon of the sanctuary is sanctified by the considerable sage Kanva. The correct time of the establishment is not known but rather the general presumption is that the sanctuary existed in the eleventh century.

Festivals

March and April are the months for celebrations. The yearly sanctuary celebration goes on for one week. Kodiyettam (flag hoisting festival) denote the start of the celebration. The festivals incorporate exhibitions of Theyyam and Thidambu Nritham, a custom work of art of North Kerala over 700 years of age. Ashtami Vilakku and Pallivetta are the two customs connected with the celebration. Pallivetta or the chasing endeavor of the Lord happens on the most recent day of the celebration. This chase is typical of the demolition of Kama (craving), Krodha (outrage) and other such shades of malice that torment us in our life. Thousands of devotees from everywhere throughout the region go to the celebration. The sanctuary is likewise novel for the way that it is one of those uncommon sanctuaries that faces the west.
