Legend and Stories
Once, in a playful mood, Goddess Ambika closed the eyes of Lord Shiva and as a result the world went into darkness. Enraged, Lord Shiva cursed her to be born as a human being. Even though being born as a human being, she wanted to marry her god Lord Shiva and performed a severe penance. Lord Vishnu also appeared from Vaikunt to give his sister’s (Ambika) hand in marriage. At the same time, Sage Sukracharya, the Guru of Demons, was also meditating on Lord Shiva for asking his boons. Lord Shiva gave preference to his devotee more than his family and hence appeared before Sukracharya first. This place is now known as Mangadu. Next, he appeared to Goddess Ambika and promised to marry her in Kanchipuram. Hearing this, Ambika went to Kanchipuram to continue her penance. Not knowing about these happenings, Lord Vishnu was searching for his sister in Mangadu and met Sage Markandeya. Markandeya briefed him about the events that occurred and asked him to stay here as Vaikuntavasar.
