As a Kudavarai Murthi, Tirumanjanam is not performed. It is performed to the procession deity only. The Lord is generally known as Sri Lakshmi Narasimha, if Mother Sri Lakshmi is on his lap. In this temple, Sri Mahalakshmi has Her place on the chest of the Lord. Sri Namagiri Thayar (Mother Lakshmi) has her shrine here facing east. It is believed that the devotee would become a pundit in mathematics if he/she worships Mahalakshmi. There is a separate temple for Bhakta Anjaneya who brought the Anjaneya Salagrama. Legends and Stories
Anjaneya is also known as Maruthi, which means Son of Vayu or the God of Wind. He is known to be a terror to all the evil demons or Rakshasas. God Hanuman is a staunch follower of God Rama and wherever people sing the praises of God Rama, he is present there with his folded hands worshipping the great god Rama. God Hanuman or Anjaneya in this temple is installed as an 18 feet tall Viswarupa Anjaneya who is known for his insight. God Hanuman is the perfect example of control and devotion towards his master. This temple is celebrated as an abimana sthalam. The idol looks straight at the feet of God Lakshmi Narasimha which is near to him. This temple was built around 1000 years ago. According to the local knowledge, it is of a belief that God Hanuman guards the fort of the Nammakal. It is also said that the idol of the mai deity grows regularly and hence there is no roof above it. God Hanuman despite being so strong is very humble and dedicated to God Rama. He used to worship to God Rama always and he made him his own Master. God Hanuman is also known as Anjani Mainthan and Vayu Puthiran because of his parents. He was born to the beautiful Apsara named Anjana and the God Vayu. Since his childhood, God Hanuman is very strong. He once flew towards the Sun and tried to eat it. God Indra had got very angry after seeing God Hanuman flying towards the Sun. He pointed his thunderbolt in the direction of God Hanuman. God Hanuman’s cheek bone got fleshed out. Hanu means cheek in the Sanskrit Language and therefore his name came to be known as Hanuman.
When God Hanuman was taking the Sanjeevi Mountain to the Himalayas, on his way he had a shower at the Gantaki waterway which is where he found the Saligramam which had the two holy places of God Vishnu together: God Sri Ranganathar and God Sri Narasimhar. God Hanuman then decided to take it home so that he can worship it later. When he was going back to Lanka, he rested near a lake to perform his Sandhyavandanam or the evening prayer. To do his prayer in peace, he started finding someone who he can give the Saligramam to. He saw Goddess Mahalakshmi who was doing meditation there. Goddess Mahalakshmi agreed to keep the Saligramam on one condition that God Hanuman would not take long time and he agreed. After finishing his evening prayer, God Hanuman started doing the Nama japam. Suddenly he felt unconscious and fell into a profound reflection. When he returned to Goddess Mahalakshmim he saw that Goddess Mahalakshmi had kept the Saligramam on the gorund and it actually had developed into a big hill. From that time onwards, that spot came to be called as Namagiri Kshetram and Goddess got the name of Namagiri Lakshmi.
