Annabishekam – Lord Shiva
Annabishekam is performed in all Shiva Temples of Tamilnadu on Full Moon Day in the month of Aipasi ( Oct-Nov). Nov 14, this year “Annaanaam Pathaye Namah:” – This is the way Lord Shiva is depicted in Sri Rudram, the focal part of The Vedas. It is to give back with appreciation whatever He has given to the humanity. Cooked Rice is smeared on the Lingam as abhishekam on this favourable day. It is to be noticed that Annabhishekam is performed everyday at Chidambaram to Sri Chandramouleeswara, the Lingam kept near Sri Nataraja. Farm yields like Brinjal, Ladies finger, pumpkin, cucumber, banana and so on are offered and used to enliven the murthi amid Annabhishekam day. It is implored to summon endowments of the Lord for a craving free society and rich yield of farming items. Devotees go to venerate this type of Shiva as it is trusted that by going to sanctuary on this day there will be plenitude of nourishment and joy at home.
Arrangements for Annabhishekam starts around 11 a.m on this day and the time taken to apply cooked rice and vegetables relies on the extent of the murthi. For example, it takes about 4-5 hours to finish the abhishekam at The Big Temple at Thanjavur and Gangaikonda Cholapuram where, the murthis are extremely tall. Individuals sit tight for the dharshan ideal from 3.30 p.m to have a look at deity. The doors open around 5 p.m and devotees throng in substantial numbers. Because of the immense size, the murthi is seen from a decent distance itself. It is a Divine involvement with no parallel.
