Story in a nutshell.

On witnessing the torments of Soorapadman, Lord Shiva and Shakthi decided to send Lord Muruga to destroy Soorapadman. Mother Shakthi Gave him a vel(spear) an incarnation of herself to kill Sooran. He proceed along with the Brave Veerabhagu to destroy the tyranny of Soorapadman and brothers. He first destroyed his brother Tarakasura, Singhamuka and then his son Banukopan and at last Soorapadman. Lord Muruga struck Soorapadman who was in the form of a tree, it fell apart into two. Lord Muruga converted one part into his rooster flag and another his Vehicle Peacock.
