What is the significance of Vijaya Ekadashi?
Vijaya Ekadashi takes place during the disappearing phase of moon in February – March. This year Vijaya Ekadashi falls on February 25, in western and certain states in South India, Vijaya Ekadashi will be observed on February 26. The importance of this Ekadasi is told in the Skanda Purana and observing of Vijaya Ekadashi helps us in eradicating all the guilt related to sins committed and also helps in achieving victory. Thus it’s known as Vijaya – victory. It is said that Divine Ram observed Vijaya Ekadashi to cross over the ocean to reach Lanka and defeat Ravana.
Narada once asked about the importance of Vijaya Ekadashi, God Brahma narrated the story,
According to the legend, God Ram and his army (the Vanarasena) was wondering how to cross the ocean to save his beloved Sita, that’s when Lakshmana suggested reaching a great sage who might provide them with a solution. When they reached the great sage, he mentioned about the benefits of observing Vijaya Ekadashi and how it will help in being victorious. Thus Divine Ram followed the procedure given by the sage and consequently he was victorious. God Brahma continued to speak to Narada,’ O my dear son! Therefore every human being should follow the vow of this Vijaya Ekadasi. The glories of Vijaya Ekadasi destroy all one’s sinful reactions.
The normal procedure linked with Ekadashi fasting is followed during Vijaya Ekadasi, grains and food made of rice are firmly avoided. Therefore observing the Vijaya Ekadashi fast helps one to be victorious and the glories of Vijaya Ekadasi will destroy all our sinful reactions.
