Sui generis features of the Thiruvengaadar temple
The Thiruvengaadar temple, located in Paappaangulam village, Kadiam Taluk, Thirunelveli district, was built a thousand years ago by the Pandya king, Adhitya Verman. The Maha Kumbabishekam (anointing the temple) took place during the Tamil month of Avani in 1945.
The salient features of this temple are:
- The Sivalinga here is made of Chandrakantha stone which is unique.
- The idol of the main deity appears bigger when seen from the temple flag staff than near to the sanctum. This is a type of forced perspective in architecture.
- The Goddess Vaadaakalai Nayagi’s idol is made by 32 perfect features.
- The idol of Guru appears with a snake under his feet. This cures the planetary effects of Raagu and Kethu.
- The idol of Lord Muruga is made of a single stone in which he appears to be seated on his vehicle, peacock.
- Here, the image of a crow under the feet of Lord Shani looks like a real crow. It is said that the Pandya King won his battles with ease crossing all hurdles after worshipping Lord Shani in this temple.
