Sri Krishna Stories – Episode 1 – Sri Vishnu Promises to be born on Earth! -Sri Krishna Stories
At Ishta Devata, with the advent of Janmastami, we have begun Sri Krishna stories series. What we know about the life of Krishna comes from two sources, the Srimad Bhagavatam, and the Mahabharata. With Janmastami around the corner, our current topic of interest is the fascinating early life of Krishna which is covered in the Bhagavatam.
Sri Vishnu Promises to be born on Earth!
Whenever Dharma, the situation of law and order, is endangered on this world, Lord Vishnu incarnates onto this world to re-establish Dharma, and to protect noble souls and to destroy the evil elements of the society. In Bhagavad Geeta, Lord Krishna declares, “Whenever and wherever, there is a decline in religious practices, and a predominant rise of irreligion I descend myself. To deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to re-establish the principles of religion, I myself will appear millennium after millennium.”
Once, Mother Earth, unable to bear the burden of sins committed by evil kings and rulers, took the form of a cow and appealed to Lord Brahma, the God of Creation, for help. Lord Brahma replied “My dear child, there is only one Being who can help you. He is Narayana!” saying so, Lord Brahma with the other Gods went to the shore of milky ocean and meditated upon the Supreme Lord Vishnu.
Brahma heard a voice within him; it was the voice of Lord Vishnu. ” I am aware of the distress of Mother Earth. I have decided to be born on earth as the son of Devaki and Vasudeva. You all are to be born on earth in the yadu clan to be my helpers as long as I remain there”
Hearing the words of Vishnu, Mother Earth and the other Gods were happy and satisfied. The all returned to their respective places.
