The Vivah panchami is celebrated on the 5^th day (panchami) of Sukla Paksha (Waxing, Valarpirai), during the ‘Margashirsha’ month of the Hindu Calendar.

Vivah Panchami is celebrated with reverence in Northern India, Nepal and Mithilanchal.

As per the epic Ramayana, The Kind of Mithila, Janaka invited many princes for a swayamvara to wed his daughter. The Condition for marriage was, the Groom has to lift the Shiva Dhanush (bow) and string it. In the hundreds of Princes present, none other than Ram, the Prince of Ayodhya was able to lift, string and break the bow. Breathless audience clapped and flower came from heaven, and princess Sita was wedded to Lord Ram. People celebrate this day with reverence. Vivaha panchami is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervour in Ayodhya, the birth place of lord Ram.

Rituals and Celebrations

• Ancient temples in Aydhya are decorated with flowers and lights. The idols are taken on a wedding procession across various temples during the day time and during the evening the Wedding ceremony is conducted.
• Events from Ramayana are enacted or narrated during this time. The enacting is called Ram Vivah Utsav.
• Devotees sing bhajans and praise Lord ram and Sita.
• In the Ram Leela both the male and female charecters are enacted by Male actors only.
• Many devotees from India visit Janakpur in Nepal, the Birth place of Sita to observe the Vivah Panchami festival.
• Special pujas and rituals are held in the ‘Dasarath, Ram and Janaki temple.
• The rituals, here lasts for 7 days.
• As a part of the rituals, devotees on the day of Vivah Panchami take a holy bath in renowned lakes of Mithilanchal like ‘Dhanushsagar’, ‘Gangasagar’ and ‘Argaza Pond’.
